Mum’s Microwave Rice
A simple family method for cooking rice in the microwave using a large microwave-safe bowl, then rinsing and draining it for fluffy, separate grains.
Ingredients
Serves
- 1½ cups rice
- Warm water, enough to sit about 3.5 cm above the rice
- 2 big pinches salt
Method
- Place the rice in a large microwave-safe bowl, roughly 30 cm wide.
- Pour in warm water until the water level is about 3.5 cm above the rice.
- Add 2 big pinches of salt.
- Microwave on high for 14½ minutes.
- Tip the cooked rice into a strainer and rinse it with cold water.
- Leave the rice to sit and drain in the strainer for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
The 14½-minute cooking time is based on the family method and may need a small adjustment for a different microwave. Use a large bowl with plenty of room so the water does not boil over.
